MLB's Embarrassment
When the Florida Marlins opened their new stadium last year, something owner Jeffrey Loria claimed they needed for years to be competitive, there was a feature that drew snickers and scorn: a giant home run pinwheel.
It was viewed as typically Miami: ugly, garish, show off, all style and no substance. It was an embarrassment in the ballpark that summed up the home city.
It's no longer the most embarrassing thing in the ballpark.

LA Lakers- Less with More
With the firing of coach Mike Brown on Friday the Lakers corrected a mistake that was questioned as soon as it was made. The termination was a surprise in its swiftness but not it its happening. With a 1-4 start behind the likes of Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and (the injured) Steve Nash it looked like more of the same from Brown: Doing less with more. As such I began to wonder, "Who in sports has done less with more talent than Brown?
The Lakers answered my question for me.

New NHL Ban
As of 3:00pm EST the NHL has cancelled the 2013 Winter Classic, to have been held in Ann Arbor, MI between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. The season looks more and more like it will be lost while apathy and grows amongst fans.
And the league truly doesn't care.

An Open Letter to Rashard Mendenhall
Rashard Mendenhall, the Pittsburgh Steelers running back, is a thinker. He's not dumb. Even if sometimes he tries a little too hard he's clearly a learned man. He's not a mindless jock. His opinions have gotten him in some warm water in the past. Last night, after a particularly frustrating loss to the Tennessee Titans, he took to Twitter again:
Below, an open letter to Rashard explaining why he's wrong.

NHL Lockout- A Fan Speaks Out
I love the NHL. As a fan, as media, and as a former employee it has
treated me well. However the NHL is once again at odds with itself and
in a lock out. While it's in the air as to whether the entire season
will be lost, as it was in 2004-05, the fans are getting restless as is
evidenced by an e-mail that landed in my inbox.

FINALLY! aka the Lost Post
This was drafted many moons ago to capture my true spirit, thrill, and elation of what seemed inevitable. This post never happened:
It's a post 20 seasons in the making. It's a post that unknowingly started in 1992 with a slide into home. It's a post that a large part of me never thought I'd ever write. It's a post that may seem stupid to some but cathartic to others.
It's a post that I take great joy in publishing on my little sports blog, allowing myself to be a fan for just a moment as my first love finally loves me back.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have 82 wins.

UPDATE: Okay, so they care a little.
According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen the NFL and NFLRA have struck a deal that will land the real referees we've grown to love (in the past three weeks) back on the sidelines by this weekend.
They Don't Care
As the pass fell from the sky a horde of men leaped into the air to claim the descending pigskin. In what is usually the most anxiety inducing play in football, the Hail Mary dropped into the arms of Green Bay Packers defender M.D. Jennings. Seahawks receiver Golden Tate wrestled with Jennings as the men fell to the ground. Questions were in the air. Then came the iconic photo.
Touchdown!(?)

Melky, Bartolo, and the Common Sense Gamble
One million dollars is not a lot of money.
There was a time where one million dollars bought you a lifetime's worth of relaxation and comfort. Not any more.
One million dollars per year for your career sounds like a lot. When your career is only on average just over five years and you're retired by around age 30, five million dollars for the next thirty to forty years of your life is not a lot.
It's the chance at an enhanced comfort and security for themselves and their families that led the San Fransisco Giants Melky Cabrera to test positive for testosterone this week. It's that same desire that led Oakland A's pitcher Bartolo Colon to test positive today. And few should blame them.

Pre-Season Football: Like Looking in the Girls Locker Room
It's that time of year. Preseason football is upon us and as per yearly tradition it's time for this:
If you were a red-blooded male in high school, at one point there wasn't much on your mind: sports, women, sports, women, food.
Your time was tempered by wondering what the girl of your choice would look like in the suit that nature had made for her.
Also, if you were like most red-blooded males, you knew you had zero chance of ever finding out.
However, there was one way. One hope. One wish. One dream.
The girls' locker room.

FOOTBALL FIX: The End of an Era
This is the start of a weekly feature, giving you your fix of the NFL in an unbearably long off season.
It's the end of an era, and perhaps a career. After 14 seasons, 1,000 catches, over 12,000 receiving yards, 85 touchdowns, two Super Bowl wins, and a Super Bowl MVP, the Pittsburgh Steelers have parted ways with receiver Hines Ward.
