When to Wear Their Jersey?

Last week my friend Jeff sent me a text with an important question:

With Max Talbot now no longer a Flyer is it okay to not feel dirty wearing his jersey again?

It's a solid question that got me thinking: when is it okay?

Another week and another ugly incident in the NHL.  Two players showing zero regard for their fellow man, going out of their way to harm another.

Why should I care?

What's Your Moment?

Whether Auburn and Alabama meant anything to you before Saturday night you've seen it over and over: one of the most memorable moments in sports history.  The 2013 Iron Bowl will go down in history as one of the most amazing and improbable endings to any game in history.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have had many years of memories and unlikely moments to build on.  What's your moment?

Pens Need Black Friday

Hooooo boy.  So... once again we, as Penguins fans, find ourselves rooting for the walking wounded.  No Martin, Bennett, Scuderi, Glass, and others.  Now the Pens icescape is littered with names we've barely seen.  Not much to give thanks for as a fan.  Is it time to make some deals?

Miss Me Yet?

We Asked for This

The Penguins have had a bit of a rough stretch.  It's amplified the pre-season concerns of a thin team without much depth on scoring or on toughness.  It's a little rough to watch as a Penguins fan and as such we're all searching for answers.  The odd part of this?  This is all "our" fault.

Can You Name More than Two?

When It's No Longer Fun

I love hockey.  I love the sport, I love the game, I love to play and watch.  I'm from Pittsburgh and I love sports.  As a result I love the Pittsburgh Penguins and, by extension, the National Hockey League.  The past week made me pause on that love.

Poor Evgeni Malkin

We as a fan base often heap praise upon Sidney Crosby, and rightfully so, while sometimes turning a side eye to Evgeni Malkin.  Malkin may win the scoring title occasionally but other times he seems inconsistent and enigmatic.  You can question him, I feel bad for him.

Fearless leaders and all stars are what make up this Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team we've grown to know and love.  Two of those, however, are in make or break years for the team.  For Dan Bylsma and Marc-Andre Fleury it's time to put up or shut up.

It's Been Worse

By all accounts the Penguins season, from roughly very late May until now, has been a mess.  Swept in a very inglorious fashion, a draft that featured few picks due to the deadline deals which worked well at first then bombed, and a free agency period featuring a lot of question marks.

While it hasn't been good, it's been much much worse.

FINALLY!

A year ago I made a post to celebrate the end of a horrible, draining losing streak for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  It touted AJ Burnett, Pedro Alvarez, and Andrew McCutchen as those most important for changing making history.

It was never published with its original intent in mind.

Tonight that post gets a second chance.  After 20 years the celebration can begin.

Pre-Season Football: Like Looking in the Girls Locker Room

It's that time of year.  Preseason football is upon us and as per yearly tradition it's time for this:

If you were a red-blooded male in high school, at one point there wasn't much on your mind: sports, women, sports, women, food.

Your time was tempered by wondering what the girl of your choice would look like in the suit that nature had made for her.

Also, if you were like most red-blooded males, you knew you had zero chance of ever finding out.

However, there was one way. One hope. One wish. One dream.

The girls' locker room.

Temper Expectations on Letang Return

It's draft day and it happens: A previously thought of "key piece" of the Pittsburgh Penguins' core is shipped to a destination other than that of the Steel City.  Contract talks didn't work out, an impasse was found and a decision was made.

(Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Is this a flashback to last year with Jordan Staal or a peak into the future with Kris Letang?  We won't know for a few days but one thing we do know: Don't expect equal value.

Worst Sports Year?

I should have seen it coming in February when the Baltimore Ravens were given the Super Bowl when a holding/pass interference call was blatantly ignored.  It allowed a man complicit in two murders live the dream ending he doesn't deserve and allowed one of the most easily hatable franchises to win the Super Bowl.

It was the start of the worst sports year.  Ever.

What's Next: Kris Letang

The What's Next series is part of an ongoing look from the Pens Initiative staff taking a look at the Penguins UFAs, RFAs, and most polarizing personalities heading into the next season.  We look at the year that was and the year coming and wonder: What's Next.

He astounds and confounds.  He piles up points and produces cringes.  His hair is as sexy as his points columns, his +/- can be as scary as life without him.  He's soon due for a large raise but what's his worth to the Pens compared to his value?  Should he stay?  Should he go?  It's What's Next for Kris Letang.

Who Is Hockey's Tim Tebow?

Your first thought when reading the headline is, "Great.  Just great.  A Tim Tebow article.  On a hockey blog, no less!"

After Tim Tebow signed with the New England Patriots on Monday the first thought was to mock the signing.  He's not a very good player but he's well known for his off the field antics.  Every sport has one of those.  One could argue that through the years Alex Rodriguez has become that man in Major League Baseball.  The NBA has the likes of Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest), whose age is reducing his effectiveness.

Who holds that title in the NHL?

Let's All Panic

Why not?  The Penguins are down 2-0, fairly convincingly, to a very tough Boston Bruins team.  Things look really bleak.  Players are playing poorly.  What else is there to do?

When Hockey was Played; A Haiku Set

Remember when the Penguins played hockey?  Man, were those the days.  I have fond memories of that far away time.  The Penguins were winning, we were doing podcasts, there were things to write about.  Alas those times seem so far away.  Instead of wallowing in pity and sadness and wandering aimlessly through the streets zombie-like, let's recap what's happened to this point.  In haiku.

Time to Change the Bylsma Narrative

Dan Bylsma sucks.

Disco Dan is an awful coach.

Bylsma is only riding the coat tails of Sid and Malkin.

Bylsma needs fired, he doesn't change anything.

We hear it all of the time.  On radio, on Twitter, on Facebook.  So many people hate Dan Bylsma.

So many people are dead wrong.

The Hype List

Sports.  Whether playing or watching they're meant to get your blood pumping, your mind racing, and your adrenaline flowing.  In the moment or the build up, the feeling of sport is hard to replace.  How people get to "sport" differs from person to person.  For me it's a Hype List.  A Hype List is a series of tracks I'll listen to on the way to the park, in the dressing room, or just before the game to get me ready to run through a wall.  After the break a peak at my hype list (some lyrics may be not safe for work).

The Beauty and the Burden of the Playoff Beard Redux

We're a week in to the playoffs and as I look in the mirror my grizzled visage stares back.  For a week my growth isn't too shabby.  After a month it's intimidating.  After the Cup it's hot and cumbersome.  But the playoff beard is a point of pride and honor for a hockey player.

Nick's Playoff... Growth?

The Playoffs begin tomorrow for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The Playoffs.  The Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Even after all of these years that term still brings a tingle.

Enjoy this tingle.

Opinions

Everyone has opinions. It's what makes things interesting at bars and in debates. This site has always been my sounding board for my opinions and I haven't shared any for a while so here we go as I correct that:

*Joe Flacco is not worth anywhere near the money that was dropped on him. He had one of the luckiest post seasons I have ever seen. Had DBs remembered how to play the deep ball (looking at you Denver and San Fran) he's still a game manager. In the end that's all he will eer be.

*I am completely apathetic about not only the World Baseball Classic but Major League Baseball. It has nothing to do with how poorly my Pirates will probably play and everything to do with how stupid and long the regular season is.

*Lebron James not being in the dunk contest is not only a non-story but it's absurd that it's already being discussed. Shame on you, ESPN, for driving that narrative.

*The Heat are peaking too soon.

*The team in the sport I won't discuss are peaking too soon.

*The NFL Draft this year will be a waste of time. There may be two franchise players taken in the first round. The rest will be decent or busts.

*Alex Smith to the Chiefs is a dumb move for the Chiefs.

*College basketball is a crap shoot this year. May not even do a bracket.

*The NBA Draft this year will be as pointless and watered down as the NFL Draft.

*I hate non-Olympic years. Passionately.

*Highlight feels are overrated.

*Ray Lewis is proof that you can do horrible things in life and be rewarded handsomely.

Heir Apperant

Indianapolis Colts fans are spoiled.  Very spoiled.  They likely know it, too.  They had one buffer year of garbage between perhaps the best quarterback of all time in Peyton Manning to the next great thing in Andrew Luck.  Bowing out in the first round of the playoffs after going 11-5 on the season the year after going 2-14 was a revelation lead largely by Luck.

(thefootballeducator.com)

Greatness replacing greatness is rare in sports.  Few want to be "the guy to replace the guy".  However recent history has a few examples of how teams have fared when they are lucky enough to fall into that position.  For a peak at the potential future of the Colts, let's have a look at the outcomes for those lucky enough to have this problem:
