It's Time to Warm Up Mike Johnston's Seat
In general, calling for a firing seven games into the season is an overreaction. Season's are long, they ebb and flow, there are positive and negative streaks which will make teams look like world beaters and world beaten. This is an exception to the rule.

The Crosby/Kessel Conundrum
The big splash of the off season, in perhaps all of hockey, was the Pittsburgh Penguins acquiring Toronto Maple Leafs sniper Phil Kessel. For a team that had seen their goals dry up in multiple play off losses, he seemed a savior.
When it was announced he would be paired with superstar Sidney Crosby, it seemed to be a revelation. "Finally! A winger for Sidney Crosby! Someone of his caliber!" Indeed, in Kessel Crosby would have the best winger he'd had since Marian Hossa at the end of the 2007-08 season.
But is this really a pairing made to last?

On Losing a Championship
On June 14th, 2015 the ECHL's season came to an end as the Allen Americans, out of Allen, Texas, defeated the South Carolina Stingrays 6-1 in Game 7 of the Kelly Cup Finals in Texas. I know this because I was there.
And I worked for the Stingrays.
And I worked for the Stingrays.

Thank You, Bob Grove
Moments ago our friends over at DKOnPittsburghSports.com broke the hard and sad news: Bob Grove would no longer be doing pre- and post-game for Penguins broadcasts. It's a sad move for anyone who has listened to the Penguins on the radio at any time. There's no way to truly say goodbye, but I'll try.

Charleston and Tragedy
I appreciate all who have reached out to check on my status, mentally and physically, after Wednesday's madness. That's what it is, madness. There is no other explanation for the hate that being had for others he'd never met.

The NHL Isn't Fun
It's another night of NHL action. Fans are settling in to arenas, dropping hard coin to watch what's supposed to be a fun, exciting product. Instead they're liable to be treated to another 1-0 snoozer. This is bad. This is pathetic. This needs to change.

The Penguins are Broken
The results continue to roll in. Every week the fans wait for the switch to be flipped, for it all to click. Instead, the Penguins start looking more and more limp. And this is the problem. The Penguins are broken.

Bottom Six Bottom Line
The Penguins top six is, when healthy, one of the better top six in the league. Having Malkin and Crosby alone make this the case. Add in healthy Perron, Kunitz, Hornqvist and Bennett (please stop laughing) and you have the makings of one of the best top six in the NHL. The bottom six? Well... there in lies the rub.

Podcast: Radio:PI 2/4/15
Mike Asti and Nick Case bring you another edition of Radio:PI on the Pens Initiative airwaves.
How much concern should be around this Penguins team? Is it simply getting healthy? Is more needed from Crosby and Malkin? Is something missing from this roster? With the trade deadline now a month away, Mike and Nick give their initial thoughts on what GM Jim Rutherford will do.
Enjoy the Pens talk with asininity on the side...

Metro Pothole or Major Problem?
Sunday, bloody Sunday took on a new meaning on the 19th. As the Rangers thumped the Penguins 5-2, it marked the official first real panic of the new era in Penguins hockey. It summed up an issue that had been dwelling, and continued into Tuesday night. The Penguins are good. The Metro might be better.

An Apology to Jim Rutherford
Dear Jim,
I write this approaching you with humble pie. I've eaten many a crow and today I was forced to consume another. I'm sorry.
